Preface
The two-days' conference will provide a forum for business leaders, industrialists, researchers, NGOs, and government policy makers to discuss strategies, management and design tools related to ecodesign and green procurement. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to share experiences of international experts from countries around Asia, Europe and US. Ultimately, the conference goal is to create a network between industry, government and research organizations to join together to work on ecodesign and green procurement, not only locally, but also regionally. The conference plans to offer business leaders and industrial participants roadmap, tools, guidelines, case studies, programs and action plans to help ensure enhance productivity and competitiveness through ecodesign and green procurement.

 
The conference GOALS are:
  1. Promote an international exchange among business, government, research and non-government organizations of experience and information on policy and strategy on ecodesign and green procurement.
  2. By sharing the roadmap, supply chain environmental management practice, and design tools, demonstrate the successful business cases and experience.
  3. Provide an opportunity to establish professional contacts and further cooperative efforts among participants, also among countries in the region.
The TOPICS of this two-days' event will include:
  1. Sustainable consumption - the demand for green products
  2. Greening of supply chain management - the need for ecodesign and green procurement
  3. The EU and Japanese green requirements on electronic and electrical products
  4. The latest development in LCA tools used for ecodesign
  5. The global and regional development of green procurement
  6. Lead free soldering technology development
  7. Case studies on ecodesign and green procurement
  8. Related development in ecolabelling, ISO 14001, environmental performance indicators, environmental management accounting, sustainability and environmental reporting.
The distinguished SPEAKERS will include industrial and governmental experts from Japan, Korea, US, UK and Taiwan. This event will be a very good opportunity for the participants to communicate with experts on ecodesign and green procurement. Participants from Asia will share their country perspectives in the roundtable discussion. We will have experts from The Sustainable Design Institute of UK to present topics on sustainable design.

Topic 1: Sustainable supply chain management: myth or reality?

Martin Charter is the Director and Visiting Professor of Sustainable Product Design at The Centre for Sustainable Design at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, University College. Since 1988, he has worked at director level in 'business and environment' issues in consultancy, leisure, publishing, training, events and research. Martin is the former co-ordinator of one the UK's first green business clubs for SMEs and presently also directs a regional network focused on 'producer responsibility' issues. Martin is presently editor of the Journal of Sustainable Product Design and was the previous editor of The Green Management Letter and Greener Management International (where he retains Editorial Board involvement).

Topic 2: Eco-design management and tools
Tom has wide environmental and management consulting experience across many industry sectors (including electronics) and countries, and specific experience in eco-design. He has a high level of knowledge of environmental and sustainability issues gained from many years' experience, such as producing guidelines on eco-design for the electronics and electrical industry for the Centre for Sustainable Design (CfSD) as part of its ETMUEL work; also carrying out a sector review of eco-design application in the UK , identifying case studies and trailing the design guidelines.

Dr. J. Y. Sung is the president of LG Institute of LG Institute of Environment, Safety & Health since 1999. He worked for LG-Caltex Oil Corp. during 1998-1997 as the director of several divisions, including Technical R&D Center, Production, and Production Service. Dr. Sung now is also the adjunct professor of the School of Environmental Engineering, Pohang University of Science, and the Department of Chemical Engineering, Technology and Kyounghee University, in Korea. He is the co-author of two books, "Energy and Environment" and "Overcoming National Crisis Through Technological Development". Dr. Sung is the Chair of Environment Division, Korean National Expert Council, of Policy Group, Green Purchasing Network, and of Counterplan Division on Climate Change Convention, Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Application of Eco-Design in Taiwan's Industry
Patrick Hung is the Project Manager at the Design Promotion Center of CETRA. Since 1995, Patrick has worked with over 35 local companies to help them improve the environmental performance of their products. He has also provided green design information, guidelines, and case studies on the Internet for the members of Design Promotion Center. He is now executing a research project for the EPA of Taiwan, planning future DFE projects for the Taiwan Design Center which will be established in the middle of 2003, and has academic and business interests in design strategy, sustainable product design, creativity & innovation of product and service, eco-design methods for SMEs.
